Costador – Metamorphika by Joan Franquet
COSTADOR & METAMORPHIKA Amphorae & Orange Wines run by Joan Franquet. His family came from Priorat region and her wife’s family came from Conca de Barberà. He works with low intervention and biodynamic practices. Located at TARRAGONA province, at CONCA DE BARBERÀ and PRIORAT on a singular mountain where there is very old vineyard. The vineyards are very old, the major part between 60 to 113 year, spanning different “terroirs” (slate, clay and limestone) at altitudes between 400 to 800 meters where normally every year snows several times. With the high contrast of temperatures, the grapes can mature for long periods allowing the preservation of freshness and acidity. The harvest is doing by hand , they do 3 selections of the grapes ( on the harvest and 2 in the cellar). Harvest is doing between September to November. The temperatures are always controlled throughout the entire process, from the moment we pick up the grape to fermentation and aging. The estate strives to preserve the authentic flavour and taste of the varietals. The major part of the fermentation is doing in Spanish clay amphora (called Tinajas from Villarobedo). He do the major part of the wines with cold pre-maceration, whites wines with skin contact during all the fermentation process ( 1 to 8 weeks) and reds fermented in amphorae and post maceration with the skins during several weeks in clay amphorae.
Aging is done in clay amphorae and used French Oak and acacia barrels as well. The estate allows a genuine wine to develop from its place of origin. The estate works with autochthonous Catalan varieties of grape: Reds Sumoll Negre, and Trepat – Grenache and Carignan. Whites : Macabeu , Xarel-lo, Sumoll Blanc, Parellada , Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Chenin Blanc . The estate’s strictly holds to low intervention and biodynamic practices from vineyard to aging.
